On Bible reading

Reading through the Bible in a year has been Fran’s and my morning practice for several years now. Like taking health supplements – you don’t notice the day-to-day effect, but over the long term you can see the results.

Our friend, Jay Grimstead, mailed a paper on the subject that expresses my thoughts as well (below).

COR UPDATE FOR JULY 2015

P.O. Box 1139, Murphys, CA 95247

READING THROUGH THE BIBLE AS BASIC TO HEARING GOD’S DIRECTIONS

Dear Friend of COR,

Recently in counseling with the 20 year old son of one of my Christian friends, I was again impressed with the Church’s need for all it’s sons and daughters (and its older people)to, year by year, systematically read through the Bible, and to keep reading the Bible over and over throughout one’s life to keep God’s perspective on life about His principles, our ultimate values, and our purpose in life.

I told him these things which he already knew, but needed to hear again at that point in his life.

1. GOD SPEAKS TO US PRIMARILY THROUGH HIS WRITTEN WORD, THE BIBLE

Since the Bible is actually 100% God’s very words (given to us through prophets and apostles acting as co-authors of the Bible), it is very natural for God to use most any sentence we read at any time to speak a personal message to us and give us needed direction, exhortation, encouragement etc. etc., as well as simply informing and reminding us of His absolute truths about all areas of life, past and present. We may expect God to speak to our hearts personal messages as well as inform us of raw facts of living.

The Bible is God’s standard of Truth and Reality to judge all other books, ideas, plans and worldviews.

2. CHRISTIANS SHOULD READ & OBEY THE BIBLE DAILY TO KEEP IN PERSPECTIVE

There is a unanimous agreement by the biblical writers as well as by all the Church History heroes that it is our great wisdom and godly efficiency to saturate our souls and minds in the written Word of God. We are to daily read and study the Word, and to memorize it, think on it and sing it regularly so it seeps into our “cells” and effects our actions, words, thoughts and plans daily and throughout all of life.

Probably nothing we do is as important for setting ourselves up for a life of obedience to His Word.

3. THE BIBLE SHOULD BE READ OVER AND OVER BY CHRISTIANS ALL LIFE LONG

My godly friends and I recommend our daily and yearly personal practice of systematically reading through the Bible, year after year, over and over to help this “Word saturation” process keep percolating.

I tell all serious Christians, young and old, who want to serve God with all their hearts whatever jobs they have, that a good minimum reading goal for the Bible for serious Christians is to read through the New Testament once each year, and to read through the Old Testament every 2 or 3 years. (The Old Testament has about 3 times as many pages as the New Testament.) One’s appetite and hunger and need for the Word seems to grow as we get older. At 80 years old, I now ordinarily read through the New Testament twice each year, and the Old Testament every year, and because of my work as a theologian, I also read through most of the Greek New Testament every three years as well. And my appetite for the Psalms now has me reading through the Psalms 3 or 4 times each year the past 20 years. (NOTE): I tell young people if they read through I and II Chronicles one year, they can leave out II Samuel and I and II Kings that reading period, then read those books alternately, since the same period of history is covered.

4. SYSTEMATICALLY KEEP A RECORD EACH YEAR OF YOUR BIBLE READING

Unless one simply reads the Old or New Testament from the front cover to the back cover(which I never seem to do), I recommend keeping a yearly list in the front of one’s Bible recording which books of which testament is read each year as we go along from book to book. It is easy to lose track if a written record is not kept. The point is to help oneself SYSTEMATICALLY get through all the books of the New Testament and Old Testament according to a schedule you think is right for you at your present stage of Christian growth and your hunger for the Word. And yes, in the earlier stages of one’s Christian life we need to sometimes MAKE ourselves do our daily Bible reading because our mind knows it is so important for our growth as Christians, and for our Biblical worldview perspective on life.

(Please see other side of page.)

5. SOME HELPFUL TOOLS FOR HEARING GOD “SPEAK” AND OBEYING THE BIBLE

A. READ WITH THE ATTITUDE “I WILL OBEY” NOT JUST “I WILL LEARN”.

If Bible-reading ever get’s “boring” for you, start reading it (as we all should anyway) with the attitude of “I will indeed obey everything I believe God is asking me to do in these verses.” At that point, Bible-reading can even get a little scary, but it will probably not be boring!

One key point to remember at this stage is that this Bible is God’s very own words as if

God Himself wrote the Bible’s words with His own hand, which spiritually, He did. The historic

Church’s view of the Bible for the past 2000 years is that the Bible is inerrant; that is, it is accurate not only where it speaks of heaven and the invisible world, but also where it speaks of matters of concern to both history and science in the world of time and space, matter and energy!

B. ACCOUNTABILITY WITH ANOTHER HUMAN HELPS US OVERCOME SIN

Most of us raised in American churches this past 100 years have had close to zero experience

of having some other human or team hold us accountable for certain levels of godly behavior. When we are unsuccessfully trying to overcome some little or big sin (actions contrary to the Bible), or any unwise or unhealthy behavior which may not technically be a sin, when we ask

a trusted friend if we may confess this sin or unwise behavior to them weekly or monthly, it can greatly help our success rate in overcoming such sins or unwise behavior. This is called

“accountability with another Christian” and it has worked well for centuries, but we in most

good American churches have never even heard of this as a healthy, Christian practice. In this

“accountability tool” we see the sad fact that generally we fear other humans more than we fear God.

C. HELPFUL “SPADE & SHOVEL” TOOLS FOR MINING GOLD FROM THE WORD

In my last year of college as a young, eager Christian I ran across this set of “mining tools” for

either an individual study or a group study of the Bible. The mining tools are these questions we

ask of any chapter or portion of scripture we are reading.

a) What command is stated here for me to obey?

b) What good example is stated here for me to follow?

c) What promise is here for me to claim for myself?

d) What sin or error is here for me to avoid or stop?

In closing I want to express this final word. I do hope all the younger Christians I know around the U.S. will take this advice seriously and apply it to their Bible-reading lives if they are not already doing so. And for those older Christians who do not have themselves reading the Bible through in some kind of systematic way year by year, I urge you to work into your life some version of what we are saying in this newsletter.

For the advancement of the Kingdom of God on earth,

Dr. Jay Grimstead JGrim1776

Ten Commandments (attached)

Stephen McDowell of the Providence Foundation is a leader in restoring our nation to her original path. I hope you will enjoy this lesson:

http://providencefoundation.com/?page_id=3880

In it he speaks of “government”. That is to direct, regulate, control, restrain. [Noah Webster 1828] Nothing God created is without a set of laws to govern (i.e. direct, regulate, control, restrain) it. There are the laws of nature as well as the laws in the Bible. Both are ordained by the same God. We discover the laws of nature by observation and reason. We learn Biblical law (given to Biblical authors by direct revelation from God) by study and meditation. Both are from the same source and will never be in conflict.

Stephen McDowell explains our nation’s rapid drift into lawlessness as the result of our failure to learn (study and meditate upon), God’s law in governing ourselves, our families, our churches and our nation.

Don’t touch the glory!

More and more people are believing the “American dream” is dead. The more people they find that agree with them, the firmer grows their belief.

Those of us who disagree, believe that there have been many times in American history when the “American dream” appeared to be dead. It ain’t over until the author of the “American dream” says it is over!

Why do I believe the “American dream” lives? It lives because of the ever-growing number of humble intercessors who are confessing America’s corporate sins (and their own), seeking God’s mercy, and turning from their individual wicked ways.

Christ summed up God’s whole purpose in putting man on this planet: Learn to love God and love others. Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, ‘Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets’.” [Mt 22:36–40]

How does God teach men to love? We are slow learners! It took 1781 years after the birth of Christ, for men to learn how to build a civil-government that would protect an individual’s opportunity to love God and others without interference.

God has a giant investment in our rebellious nation. The rest of the world knows that. If what He demonstrated in America should fail, it will appear to the world that men are not capable of self-government and the “American dream” is a failure. Think about the hopelessness that will cause all over the globe.

Forget majority rule – God permitted Abraham to negotiate over Sodom. If God finds enough humble intercessors seeking His mercy rather than hunkering down waiting for justice, who knows what might happen!

It takes a cooperative effort. If God does it alone, then justice is not served. Man sure can’t do it alone without God’s inspiration and wisdom! With a humble willingness and an outpouring of the Holy Spirit all things are possible! YEA GOD!

Even the humble and righteous can have problems with pride. When you see our precious ship of state being righted and set back on course be very careful not to touch the glory. Love God and others and give Him all the credit!

For a number of years, my wife, Frances, has been teaching Latin to students across the nation using Skype as a virtual classroom. It is great! The students make distant friends and often vacation-visit. Her students score well on the National Latin Exam. One was among the very few who scored 100%! *

Things you can do now

Most of the folks I know are worried about America’s moral decline. They feel helpless to do anything about it that is effective. This causes frustration and – if we are not careful – anger and fear. I have some thoughts about truly effective things each of us is capable of doing.

Each of us can prepare in some way. When the economy collapses, and it must, unless there is a move of God that prevents it, a stock of food, water, and other emergency supplies will be good to have on hand.

Think about this Biblical principle – Those supplies are not just for your survival, they are to be shared with others in need. The principle is that in giving, God has the option of multiplying. (five loaves and two fish) If we hoard for ourselves – supply becomes finite.

Every day now, we hear reports of gruesome atrocities being committed by ISIS. The Natzi’s usually hid their atrocities, but ISIS broadcasts them all over the world. Why is that?

They do it in order to strike fear in our hearts. If we, you and I, accept fear, they win. Rather, God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of love, joy, and a sound mind. By rebuking fear we can individually defeat their effort. Love casts out fear! A fearless attitude communicates to those we deal with. Your fearlessness makes ripples that spread to others.

So here are two truly effective things each of us can do.

Think about survival supplies, little things you can afford. Even just thinking about it can do wonders. Prepare to share with those in need that your unselfishness might multiply.

Choose to rebuke fear. If you are martyred, you are with Jesus. Death for your faith will multiply faith in others. What is to fear?

God wins! Love wins!

Finding hope

In my last blog post, I told the story of Vashti losing her crown. A dear friend sent me corrections to the story (below). He admonished me about “enhancing” God’s word and he is right! Please accept my apologies.

Just to clarify, Ahasuerus, summoned his wife on the 7th day of the feast, it had not lasted for a month. There was a prior feast in a different part the country that lasted 180 days, but the feast you mentioned had only lasted for 7. The Bible gives no indication that it was an orgy, in fact, it gives every evidence that the women were separate from the men. Ahasuerus was not "drunk", the Bible uses the word "merry", a very different term than the Bible’s term forbidding "drunkenness" (please see II Chronicles 7:10 where the Bible uses the same word for "merry"). And lastly, she was not ordered to dance, only to display her royal beauty. In fact, by the account given in Scripture, Vashti disobeyed a lawful request from her husband, and a lawful request from her king. I only point these out because it is very important that Christians only present the Word of God for what it is, not for what we read into it, or how our cultural background interprets it.

Regarding “Finding hope” – Many have seen the moral decline of our society and lost hope in a recovery. “There is a tipping point beyond which there is no recovery.” Like Jonah they are ready to sit and observe God’s overdue hand of justice fall upon our society.

They may be right! We have certainly earned God’s justice as a society. Looking at “reality” in America – it is what it is!

Given those happy thoughts – Where does one look to find hope? God told Moses He was fed up with His “chosen” people and was about to start over with Moses. “Don’t do it,” said Moses, “It will give you a vengeful reputation in the world.” The Bible says that God said He would change His mind! Prayer DOES change things!

Realistically, I find no hope for our society.

Knowing God, I find abundant hope for our society. To begin with – The ungodly have captured most of our sources of news. If God’s hand were at work, do you suppose the news media would encourage us by telling us about it?

Look at Bible stories, then look at the stories of miraculous “coincidences” in American history. Today’s situation is certainly not the first time things looked hopeless! As a matter of fact, it appears to me the darkest times are when God likes to move.

Re-read 2nd Chronicles 7:14. God has a lot invested in America – The first ever nation founded upon His principles. He prefers mercy over justice – if it is reasonable. What makes it reasonable? Humble people admitting our sins and turning to Him for salvation as a nation – for His sake and the sake of His principles.

Many will say, “That just isn’t reasonable!” That is what makes it worthwhile. God gets the credit! Individuals – you and me – uniting in humble prayer for mercy over justice for America. Nothing is impossible for God!

When He comes to check on me, I want to be found excited about what He is about to do to heal our land! It sure beats hunkering down and waiting for justice to fall!

2015-06-27 I will not conform

This is a letter to our friends –

I will not conform!

Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. [1st Peter 2:13-14]

Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. [Hebrews 13:17]

Christians have told me we should submit to the authority God places over us. I agree. They continue, therefore, we should obey every law of those God places over us. I disagree.

We all know the story of King David and Bathsheba (the lady he saw bathing next door to the palace). God made David king. God had given David a king’s authority. David sent for Bathsheba to come to his office. She came as she should, under his authority.

David propositioned Bathsheba (a married woman). She complied. David was outside the limits of his God-given authority, when he propositioned Bathsheba. She had every right to refuse.

My point – Authority has boundaries. Even God-given authority.

In another Old Testament example – In the book of Esther, the King is hosting a month long orgy for his governors. He is drunk and sends for his queen, Vashti. He wants her to come dance for the gov’s. Vashti refuses to come. The gov’s complain, this is going to give them domestic problems at home! Vashti loses her crown.

I believe she said, “No” to the wrong request. Vashti should have come when called. BUT, she should have arrived in a loose fitting floor-length turtleneck! When asked to dance then she should have refused. No domestic problems for the gov’s.

America’s founding philosophy was that any law that violates the “laws of Nature” or the “laws of God” (The Bible) is not to be honored, it is no law at all.

Parents have God-given authority over their children. Must a child obey a parent who tells him to do something that is sinful? Authority has boundaries.

The Supreme Court says all states must recognize homosexual marriages. That ruling violates both Natural and Revealed Law. It is thus, “No law at all.” I will not honor that law, nor if called upon, will I conform to it.

The time is rapidly approaching when individuals must decide to conform or not conform to man made laws. If they are within the, “Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God” then you should conform. If not – Then you must not!

The difference between law and advice – A law has a consequence. Each of us is going to have to learn new levels of trust in God as we face consequences.

Many are surprised to discover that Glenn Beck (He used to be on Fox News) is still on the air and on TV. As a matter of fact, Beck invested the fortune he built up on Fox, in his very own Radio and TV network, “The Blaze”. He has managed to remain debt free and is thus free to say and do anything he pleases. Dish network customers will find “The Blaze” on channel #212.

A list of the astounding accomplishments of his endeavors is long and very impressive. That is not what I’m writing about. Glenn Beck says that he is a dedicated Mormon. Evangelical Christendom has some serious problems with the Mormon faith. That is not what I am writing about. On frequent occasions he and his New York associates slip into humor that is offensive to the culture outside the north-east. That is not what am writing about.

I am writing about a TV giant who has put his life and fortune into his very best efforts to follow God’s leading in his life. He is thus under continual attack. I see those attacks as badges of honor!

I have followed Beck for a few years now. I find him to be real and dedicated. Like the rest of us, he sees America’s economy on the verge of collapse, One of his TV documentaries demonstrated that the gold in Fort Knox has been “sold” multiple times and is very likely no longer there! Because he is free of external authority, his news coverage is far deeper than you will find on Fox News

I am writing about a source of information and inspiration so greatly needed by every American today. The inspiration that God has each of us here for a purpose. The encouragement that there is a task, greater than ourselves, for every one of us! We /You/ I am not helpless, being swept along toward chaos. One man can make a difference. Are you that man? We are Americans!

Please accept my invitation to invest $100/year. I believe the first month is a free trial period. That investment opens The Blaze.com TV network to you on your computer.

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. I am in His flock.I will have everything I need.

He makes me lie down in green pastures beside still waters. There I find peace.

He restores my soul: He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. I am forgiven! I know where to go.

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me. What’s to fear?

Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. The rod of correction and the staff of security show I am loved.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. I am a living testimony of God’s provision.

You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. You permit me to serve you. I am embarrassed by your grace.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. Goodness in opportunity and mercy in suffering.

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Wow!
